Elm Apartments 1994
James R. Dee started the telephone business in the Houghton-Hancock area, and brought electricity to the area through the Peninsula Electric & Light Company. As the demand for electricity increased, Dee needed a new place of business. The James R. Dee Block became home to his electric company. The Daily Mining Gazette and the post office were also located in the building.
Originally constructed in 1890. It’s held a saloon under a couple different owners. Martin Kratt was in possession of the saloon from 1895 to 1900. In 1900, John Evert took over the saloon & in 1919 turned the building into a soda fountain, open until 1927. In 1964, Ray’s TV opened up shop, followed by California Connection (Clothing) and and then 906 Vapor until 2024. The second and third floors of this building serve as apartments.
